The people, planning, and lessons behind a successful Mobility Cup 2026.

We caught up with Eric Molendyk, Chair of Mobility Cup 2026, whose dedication and tireless efforts in Vancouver made this year’s event a resounding success for everyone involved. 

1. How did you first become involved in accessible sailing?

I first became involved with adaptive sailing in 2005. I was working at the Disability Foundation for one of their other societies and was asked to get involved with the Adaptive Sailing Association of British Columbia to promote the program and recruit volunteers. I've been involved with the program ever since and a manager since 2021.

2. What inspired you and your organization to host Mobility Cup 2026?

It was the 35th anniversary, and we had long discussed hosting it. This year seemed like the perfect time to do so. We were excited as an organization to welcome the sailing community to Vancouver for Mobility Cup, back to where it all began 35 years ago.

3. Looking back at the event, what moments stand out to you the most?

What stands out to me the most is the camaraderie and the fun that was had between sailors and volunteers. I enjoyed seeing first-time participants of Mobility Cup develop their skills and make lifelong memories on the water.

4. What were some of the biggest challenges in organizing Mobility Cup?

The biggest challenge is all the different logistics: accommodations, transportation, on-water resources, making sure we have enough lifts, volunteers, food, fundraising, etc.

5. What advice would you give to another club considering hosting Mobility Cup?

For anyone taking on Mobility Cup, I started working on this in February of 2025, I definitely recommend giving yourself 2 years to be prepared and connect yourself with as many people as possible who have done this before. As you go through all the aspects of Mobility Cup, try and have a point person on different aspects of the event.
